Sarah Adams and Meghrig Milkon were elected Editors in Chief of Volume 153 of The Journal on Feb. 12.

With a 72 per cent voter turnout from a pool of 50 electors, 88.6 percent cast their votes in favour of Adams and Milkon, affirming their confidence in the duo’s ability to fulfill the responsibilities of Editors in Chief in an uncontested election. The final tally saw 31 votes in favour, four against, and one abstention.

Milkon stepped into the role of Senior News Editor this volume after a four-month stint as Senior Arts & Culture Editor, building on her experience as an Assistant News Editor in Volume 151. Meanwhile, Adams made her debut at The Journal this year as one of two Features Editors.

“I really couldn’t have imagined doing it with anybody else other than her, so I’m really thankful that she sent that first message convincing me to run, and now we’re here,” Milkon said in an interview with The Journal.

Next volume, Milkon hopes to foster an open, engaging newsroom where conversations flow freely and The Journal remains a place where staff not only collaborate but genuinely enjoy their time.

After being rejected for a Senior Editor position in Vol. 151, Adams explained how her road to Editor in Chief has felt surreal.

“It feels like a complete circle and isn’t with a lack of hard work and is something I’ve been wanting for a really long time, so this is awesome,” she said.

The pair expressed interest in introducing new positions to The Journal, upholding long standing traditions like Alumni Day, and maintaining the strong community the paper currently sees.

Current Editors in Chief, Allie Moustakis and Skylar Soroka are looking forward to seeing what’s in store for the next volume of The Journal, recognizing the progress made in recent volumes and the potential for future growth.

“I know the love they both share for The Journal and I know they’ll use that ion to inspire Volume 153 and their staff,” Soroka said. “They’re going to be dealt their fair share of challenges—whether it’s the house relocation or navigating masthead turnover—but they have all the tools at their disposal to handle whatever comes their way.”

Moustakis spoke to the strong sense of community at The Journal, and her excitement in being able to see it take form.

“They’re ushering in and leading a new generation of Journal staff and people who will be able to call The Journal home. I’m really looking forward to their next masthead and how that will shape [The Journal],” Moustakis said.

Moustakis and Soroka reflected on their own time leading the paper, recognizing the challenges and rewards of the role. They look forward to seeing the new Editors in Chief take on the responsibility and continue The Journal’s long standing legacy as the de facto school of journalism at Queen’s.
