Queen’s Women’s and Men’s Volleyball teams delivered intense back-to-back matches against the Brock Badgers this past weekend Nov.1 to 2, showcasing resilience and grit. The Women’s team, now 3-1, split their doubleheader, while the Men’s team continued their unbeaten streak at 4-0.

Women’s Volleyball

The Women’s team opened their double header on Nov. 1 with a close, back and forth match against the Brock Badgers. Dropping the first set, 24-26, the Gaels would rally back to trade a close set 27-25, two more close sets, 21-25 for Brock in the third, and 25-23 for the Gaels would set up a dramatic fifth and final set.

Both teams would find themselves tied at 15, but Brock would be the first to find the momentum to score two in a row to take the final set 16-18.

Hannah Duchesneau, ArtSci ’25, lead the team in kills and digs, with 16 and 10 respectively. Christine Abu, ArtSci ’26, anchored the defensive end with seven blocks. The loss was the team’s first of the season, but they had the chance to avenge themselves the next day.

After a rocky start, dropping the first set 10-25, Queen’s found themselves in the driver’s seat, winning the next three sets 25-18, 25-7, and 25-15 to close out the match.

Claire Carter, Comm ’27, took command of both ends leading the team with 11 kills, and nine digs. Aimee Lemire, ConEd ’25, was a presence at the net with five blocks.

This double header improved their record to 3-1 but dropped their national ranking from sixth to seventh. The team will look to improve their record with another double header against the Windsor Lancers, this weekend on home court.

Men’s Volleyball

The Men’s team also found themselves in a tense match, trading sets back and forth with the Badgers. In their first game, Brock took the first and third sets, 18-25, and 21-25, with the Gaels taking the second and fourth, 25-20 and 25-19 respectively to set up another dramatic final set.

This time, Queen’s would be the team to find the momentum to close out the match—weathering a four-point comeback from the Badgers to win the fifth set, 15-13.

Reed Venning, ArtSci ’26, had no trouble finding the ground with 22 kills. Dax Tompkins, ArtSci ’25, and Izaak Zabjek, Kin ’26, both had seven blocks in the contest to help out block the Badgers 18.5 to three.

In the second leg of the double header, the Gaels found themselves continuing to outpace Brock, taking the first, third, and fourth sets, 25-19, 25-21, and 25-18—their one loss coming in the second set losing 20-25.

Zabjek would again anchor the net, with 10 blocks contributing greatly to the Gaels who again out blocked the Badgers 15 to two. With similar kills, assists, and digs, the defensive side is where Queen’s was able to win.

The Men’s team remains undefeated after the weekend, with a record of 4-0, improving their national ranking from fifth to fourth. They will look to maintain their unbeaten streak as they host a doubleheader against the Windsor Lancers this weekend.

You can watch both teams in the ARC Main Gym starting at 6 p.m. on Nov. 8 and 4 p.m. on Nov. 9. Games can also be streamed online at OUA.tv.
